We use specialist coffee importers for our beans depending on which beans we want to import. We receive samples that we 'cup' or taste-test. The ones that frolic in our nostrils and dance across our tongues are the ones we bring in.
Our importers in the UK are InterAmerican and Mercanta – the coffee hunters. They base their operation on the relationship with the growers and ensuring great quality of the coffee by rigorous cupping. Mercanta employs some of the best coffee cuppers in the industry. I buy coffee based on quality and taste first. We get small samples of beans in quite often and ‘cup’ each to taste which ones we like. Secondly, I want to know who grew my coffee and if they are producing a great coffee I want to buy their coffee again next harvest. Traceability and knowing the producers is an important part of the coffee relationship. No cat shat beans. The cat shat beans really aren’t that good. Moreover, the liklihood is that the creatures are force-fed the beans because of the increase in price. So we don’t buy in Kupi Luwak. It’s also not the world’s most expensive coffee. St Helena Peaberry is an excellent coffee that is expensive due to the high cost of production and excellent cup. I would consider buying St Helena coffee, never Kupi Luwak. It should be about the taste and the ethics, not celebrity. |
