Our coffees

We have many speciality coffees from top estates and cooperatives.  Coffee beans go stale two weeks after roasting. We roast a few batches at a time to ensure freshness in our beans. Click the 'Just roasted' tab, top right, to find out what beans we have freshly roasted.

For general information about the beans we have in stock see below.

El Borbollon E-mail

El Salvador 100% red bourbon

The coffee is grown on a couple of farms, La Reforma & El Cerro, in Santa Ana owned by the Alvarez family. They've been growing coffee here for over one hundred years and with the exception of the years of political unrest, the family have produced some great coffees. The varietals on the farms are bourbon and pacamara. Most of the coffee is mixed but they have areas where they only grow the red bourbon varietal (the colour signifies the colour the cherry turns when ripe, others are orange or yellow) and this they give the 100% red bourbon moniker.

The West of El Salvador is full of volcanoes and the soil provides rich nutrients for growing at high altitude. All the coffee on the plantation is grown under a shade of trees, which not only causes the fruit to develop over a longer period, thus building the sugar content of the seeds, but also helps to maintain a thriving bird population.

The mill that the family use is called El Borbollon and sponsors schools for the children of its workers. Medical facilities are also available at both farms and the workers are paid above average wages. This is not because they are particularly philanthropically minded, rather it guarantees that quality workers remain in the area ensuring good quality coffee year on year.

BSCA Espresso Blend E-mail

The Brazil Speciality Coffee Association makes up an espresso blend of beans taken from its many members from Bahia, the Cerrado, Mogiana, and South Minas.  This comprises many single estates and different varietals. The BSCA espresso blend is only made up in small volumes, is quite expensive and only two importers buy the blend, one of which is Mercanta.

The blend is made after cupping each harvest from all the BSCA's members. The intention of the blend is to enhance body acidity, aroma and natural sweetness.
